WEAVING WORKSHOPS, SEMINARS, LECTURES & PRIVATE LESSONS
I am committed to sharing my weaving knowledge and discoveries through a teaching practice that meets other weavers where they are and gives them new tools to achieve their personal weaving goals. My educational offerings include a wide variety of workshops, seminars, and lectures for weaving conferences, craft schools, guilds, and groups, both in-person and online. There is a lot of variety because I love exploring new ideas to see what happens and then sharing my discoveries with other weavers. Providing enough information to help you make decisions required a little shorthand that is explained on this page.
ORGANIZATION
GETTING STARTED workshops include beginning weaving, then progress to the logical next steps in weaving skill development. They provide a foundation that allows a weaver to progress in any direction desired.
WEAVE STRUCTURE classes focus on how different interlacements work to create pattern in woven cloth. Some are familiar names: overshot, summer and winter, twill, etc. Others are less common but have been subjects of my curiosity and experimentation.
TECHNIQUES workshops cover a variety of skills that can be applied to multiple weave structures to enhance or manipulate woven patterns or make them easier to weave. They include playing with color order, getting different designs from a single warp, turning drafts, or embellishing cloth on the loom with hand-manipulation of warp threads.
DESIGN classes are all about the thinking and planning needed to weave fabric that performs as intended, both functionally and artistically. Some focus on artistic inspiration and interpretation. Others build technical skills that help a weaver plan a project, get a warp on the loom, weave it consistently and efficiently, and turn it into the finished product they wanted.
HISTORY presentations includes my tribute to the adventurous life and contributions to modern American handweaving by my favorite weaving master, Mary Meigs Atwater.
FORMAT
The page title is Workshops, but my teaching extends to other formats, including seminars and lectures. Here is how I distinguish between them:
WORKSHOPS: A hands-on learning experience, usually on pre-warped looms, that lasts from 1 to 5 days depending on the preferences or needs of the hosting organization. In-person workshops are consecutive days. Multi-day workshops presented online can be consecutive days or spaced out over a week or a couple of weeks to allow time for sample weaving.
SEMINARS: An extended lecture that includes time for participants to practice the skills being taught through paper-and-pencil exercises or interactive discussion. Most are 3-hour (half-day) sessions and can be presented in-person or online.
LECTURES: An overview of a single subject lasting from 60-90 minutes. Audience interaction is limited to questions at the end. These are most common as guild programs, either in-person or online.
PRESENTATION STYLE
ZOOM FRIENDLY: This indicates a workshop, seminar or lecture that is suitable for online presentation, usually via Zoom. Workshops without that designation, round-robins for example, are best presented in-person.
ROUND ROBIN: These workshops allow participants to move around the room weaving samples on looms warped by their classmates. These samples are cut off at the workshop’s end and distributed to their weavers.
CUSTOMIZATION
